What is Spatial Computing?

Spatial computing refers to the seamless integration of digital information and the real-world. Spatial computing relies on many new technologies, including depth sensors, projection displays, microLED display, computer vision, 5G networks, head-mounted displays, GPUs, and more. It is possible that in the future, any or all of these technologies will be replaced by technologies that have not yet been discovered.

What will Spatial Computing allow users to do?

As with the Internet and computing at large, spatial computing will enable users to do myriad activities. Examples might include playing squash using a mixed reality headset whereby the user’s racquet and ball are purely virtual, yet the user is playing against a real-world wall, with the headset realistically analyzing and visually representing the ball as it bounces against that wall. In other instances, a user’s headset might display a virtual TV screen mounted on a real-world wall, or enable a user to immersivity explore a video of their child’s birthday years after it occurred. Enterprise applications involve the full real-time, three-dimensional simulations of fleets of vehicles, factories, people, and more, to better enable optimized workflows, reporting, and live decision-making.

Is Spatial Computing distinct from the Metaverse?

The term “spatial computing” was coined in 1993, while the “Metaverse” comes from 1992. Neither term has a firm definition and there are individuals who will define them separately. In the perspective of Roundhill Investments, these terms are largely identical and primarily reflect the fact that in the late 1980s and early 1990s, there was no standard term that referred to a future Internet that enabled multi-dimensional immersion and supported the seamless integration of synthetic information and the physical world. Just as different theorists developed different terms decades ago, different companies are embracing different terms today. Other examples include “the matrix” (coined in 1984), “cyberspace” (also 1984), hyper-digital reality (2021), telexistence (1980s), and more.
